Many people grow up in small towns, move away and never give their home town a second thought.
Buzz Deschamps is not one of those people. The Midland Sports Hall of Fame Committee is honouring Buzz with a unique tribute this evening – honourary membership on our committee. He is the first person to be granted this honour.
Buzz was the “mover and shaker” in getting the Midland Sports Hall of Fame started. It is a tribute to his tenacity, dedication and devotion to the Midland community. Buzz served as the Chairman for many years, making sure he attended most meetings after a long trip from his home in New York. He has been inducted as an Athlete as well as being a member of the Midland Indians Baseball teams that have been inducted in the past.
A professional hockey player in the 60’s and 70’s, he returned to Midland in the summers to play baseball with the highly regarded Midland Indians.
Buzz spearheaded the creation of Bunn’s Kids in the 1990’s which has enabled hundreds of children to participate in sports and recreation activities in Midland and area. The organization is a tribute to his fathers (Buzz Deschamps) life long involvement in the Midland sporting cornmunity.
Most recently, Buzz was instrumental in starting the annual Trottier 19 Hockey School in the North Simcoe Sports and Recreation Centre, which features Hockey Hall of Famer Bryan Trottier.
Buzz continues to return to Midland for many reasons and is a well known Midland booster!
To Buzz, we say THANK YOU! You truly are a one of a kind Midlander and we can all very happily say that you have contrib-uted so much to our community over so many years.
