Carol Finlayson and Cindy Higgins exemplify countless qualities required to be successful as a member of an outstanding team. Their ability to work together, both during in-club competitions at the Midland Lawn Bowling Club (MDLBC) or at varying levels of the Ontario Lawn Bowling Association, truly separated them from their competitors. Carol and Cindy’s long standing friendship and their love for the game, combined to create the determination and skill behind their tremendous success and made them a team to be reckoned with.
Carol and Cindy’s achievements in pairs competitions was the clearest reflection of their success as teammates. They were the first team from the Midland Lawn Bowling Club to ever compete at the Provincial and National Level. Their first championship came at the 2012 Provincials, winning the Gold Medal in Women’s Pairs. They entered the Gold Medal game as underdogs to the home team favourite. “We were leading 3 -0 after the first end and fought hard to maintain this and win. We both felt we had the best game we had ever played. It was an unforgettable moment.” Building on their previous year’s success, they followed it up in 2013 winning the Provincial Silver Medal, before returning to the top of the podium in 2017 winning their second Women’s Pairs Provincial Gold Medal and a place in the Bronze Medal match at Nationals.
Success came at all levels for this pair. Having worked together for so many years as teammates, they perfected their skills, winning medals at the District, Provincial and National Levels. Lawn bowling rules restrict athletes to competing in one category at the Provincial Level. Competing in the Triples and Fours category prevented Carol and Cindy from competing in doubles those years, but did not stop them from winning. In 2013 they were instrumental in winning a Provincial Silver Medal in Senior Women’sTriples, followed up by a National Bronze Championship. Their Women’s Four’s team in 2015 won a Provincial Gold Medal, highlighting their ability to win in all categories.
In true fashion, Carol and Cindy’s success on the lawn bowling green directly translated into them being amazing ambassadors of the sport. The recognition of their abilities as a team resulted in fellow competitors requesting Carol and Cindy to teach clinics across the province of Ontario.
Carol and Cindy’s greatest attribute as a team is their ability to remain humble whether in victory or defeat.
